Body of Christ, family of faith: the church. Ecclesia: those called out of the world and dedicated to new life in Christ. Koinonia: fellowship of believers. As people belonging to Jesus through baptism and through faith that's alive by the power of God's Holy Spirit, we are called to be together in worship, prayer, fellowship, and service.

You know it: it's easier than ever to form and be active in community—even if what you're in is a virtual community. We know it too: Web 2.0 applications like Facebook and YouTube are redefining what community means for all of us. In a sense, more of us are in more of each other's lives—and it's become as natural and comfortable a thing as slipping into a pair of TOMS.

Can we draw strength from that—and, in that context, from each other? We believe so. It was he [Christ] who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (Eph. 4:11-16) |
